Activity in Spanish proposal for NVDACon

Iván Novegil

Hello all.

If you remember, last summer I sent to this list, through NVDACon's info address, used by Derek, some information regarding our local community meeting, which finally took place from 19th through 21st October 2018 with quite success and really interesting conferences in our language, and requesting suggestions from the NVDACon's organization team.

This time I'm writing here to propose an idea we've been thinking about for some days and which has been well received by some people on our community list.

It would be very interesting for us to explore the possibility of broadcasting NVAccess keynote in Spanish, and we have got several points we'll need to discuss if you like this project:

1. Recording the original part and the translation and then broadcasting them, mixed, through the platform which is finally chosen for NVDACon (through the main channel or even through an additional one to not interfere with other conferences in english), at an affordable time for Spanish speakers (timezones range from UTC+1/+2 to -5/-6).

2. Recording the original part and the translation and broadcasting them, mixed, on our own, with the corresponding permissions.

3. Possibility of letting attendants do questions, also bidirectionally translated. This time, as it was done with the European time adaptation last year, I think that someone from NVAccess should be present.

We've already asked an experienced translator who has agreed on translating this if his calendar allows him to. Anyway we could even find another if there were any problems with calendars.

What do you think about this?

It would be great for us to organize this as it would directly provide our community with information we've never able to access under the same conditions as English speakers.

Thank you in advance. Regards.

That could be interesting as a native spanish speaker. I kind of translate something, but not all, content, but for me that's not important.

I think this can theoretically be done if we can stream to multiple channels at the same time. Because the best option in my view would be to do it at the same time when we stream the second time the key note for european time zones. NV Access will hopefully be available again for answering questions or discussing suggestions. If you have a translator who can fulfil your needs, why not?

The biggest concern I have in this regard is that if we do this for spanish language, I know at least three more countries which would like to do it as well. So we run into a never ending story.

But why don’t you just invite NV Access personally to the spanish conference? At least for an interview? This would clarify many questions during the year.

I propose you a solution: we could stream the keynote live on youtube and your translator could then translate it simultanuously. The translator must be logged in teamtalk at the same time. So the spanish users on youtube can write comments and raise questions and the translator can read them live at the keynote since he is on Teamtalk. Then, he can translate the answers simultanuously on youtube. We just have to make sure that his spanish translations are heared only on the spanish youtube channel where the conference is streamed and his english is heared both on youtube and teamtalk.

This could work with multiple countries at the same time. I think this is not too hard to achieve.

Derek do you have any thoughts on this?

Dear Adriani,

thank you for your response.

The problem I see with the european re-streaming is that it's for Europe, not for America too, that is also a continent we'd like to reach.

If some other language would like to do this its community has just to ask here as we're doing now, IMO.

Regarding your question, we haven't invited NVAccess to our local meeting for two reasons:

1. It was the first time we were organizing something like that. There were some ideas we discarded because we thought that it would be a too high effort for us on the first time.

2. And, on the other hand, we have NVDACon. If we have the opportunity of killing two birds with one stone, wy don't we take advantage of it?

However, as you say, that is a really good possibility to explore for our next conference if we don't succeed with this project at NVDACon.

With regard to your technical concerns, I rather prefer TeamTalk than Youtube, although we can use it as an additional channel. Since one can run many TT instances simultaneously, we can do it as you suggest with that facility. Could be use, in that case, your TT server? This, of course, asuming that the chosen platform is Teamtalk.

Thanks. Regards.

Hello,

reaching the american People will not be a Problem I guess. In fact, we have the live keynote which is at convenient times for america, Australia etc, and the second stream which is for Europe, Asia etc. So the concern here is that you would Need two translators, one who is translating at the first live key note and another one who is translating at the second stream. If we can Setup to stream it on two different TT Servers that could work. But your users will benefit much more if they can attend on YouTube because it is much easier to handle. But we will see what we can do. If your translator is very good at Multi tasking we might try to achieve a Setup where we use a separate TT Server and YouTube at the same time. But you should test in Cour community first if the Setup would work without causing any Problems.

Note that our Goal this year is to achieve as many People as possible. There are also many People who are not familiar with teamtalk.

Hi.

sorry for the delay, we were full of work these weeks.

We will consider your proposal as it is ideal, but I really don't think we'll be able to find a translator with tha availability and as proved English knowledge as this one. Anyway, we'll try to do so.

Regarding broadcast channel we also want to reach the maximum number of users, but I think that we should focus firstly on TT (or whatever NVDACon platform finally decides to use) and then explore secondary channels as Youtube. IMO the best option would be to broadcast by another channel on your platform, or even on our own TT server and then send that audio to Youtube.

Hi Iván:
Congratulations on the success of your first NVDACon Spanish edition! Having a Spanish translation of the keynote is a great idea. By translating the keynote to a large language group, we can broaden the impact of NVDACon. However, I think a translated replay of the keynote after the conference will be much easier to pull off. We're already strapped for resources as it is during the keynote, and need to make sure the resources we have are adequately  situated to carry out a large number of tasks. For one, we need to watch out for bad actors attacking the server (Which has happened at previous NVDACon events). We need to have the resources to stop spammers from messaging people or engaging in other undesirable behavior, and protect our infrastructure, especially for something like the keynote, and I'm concerned that trying to manage a live stream, especially if someone specifically decides to attack the streaming machine, could ruin the entire keynote. We have a lot going on at once for the keynote. Many people ask questions in chat, the organizers are communicating with each other to ensure that the speakers' mics are working properly, Ensuring that people who sign into the server after the event has started are routed to the main conference, and more. My primary concern is making sure that your translation of the keynote is a success, and engages the Spanish NVDA community, and thus I want to take every step I can to ensure that goal can be met.
I'm slightly concerned with the logistics of streaming through the channel while we are live. If you guys are able to provide someone to help us set up the recording bridge, we could make sure your live stream is present during the keynote, and try to address translated questions. Another option would be to have a separate Q&A session for translated questions, where a translator would be present to translate the NV Access answer to the speakers native language. Since we now have a youtube channel, I'll be working specifically to make sure NVDACon can stream things to youtube (although that requires video, and we aren't set up to stream video right now).
Cheers,
Derek

Just a suggestion, if the spanish community decides to replay a translated Keynote after the NVDACon, we could address translated questions to NV Access ourselves, that means the spanish community could send the questions to the organizers, chairs and co chairs of NVDACon and we can direct the questions to NV Access. After that, we can direct the answers from NV Access to a representant of the spanish community who would distribute the answers in a separate session. This would also be a new position on the NVDACon organizing board. We could decide upon a person who is willing to collect questions, direct them to NV Access, colect the answers and direct them to the spanish community. The best way would be a english speaking person from the spanish community.

This could imply a certain time range for questions and answers to be collected and directed, let’s say during one week after the conference. It would be only one week in a year where NV Access would have to be available for answering questions.

The spanish community seems very actie and it contributes alot to the international development of NVDA. I would really like to give this oportunity to that community.

Hi Derek.

A replay is OK for us, in fact it was my initial proposal. I've also found a possible translator that could be available in the night (our night, note that we are now using UTC+1, UTC+2 during summer, same as Germany) if we finally opt by Adriani's idea of simultaneously translating American edition (I understand, from your message, that in this case it should be broadcasted trhough a different server in order not to overcharge your human & technical resources).

The way to translate I think that would be better for all is, as I've said on my initial message, to do a replay with a pre-recorded translation as you're suggesting (during our afternoon to compatibilize Spanish and Latin-American timezones) and then, if possible, to have a separate q&a session. To simultaneously translate the live keynote is also a very real possibility that I'm willing to carry out, but as you've also said it would imply a more complex logistic from both our and your side.

In case of a replay, would you allow us to use your TT server, if the chosen alternative finally is Teamtalk? Of course we can also use our own TT server, but I think that it would better for all to use yours.

With regard to the last Adriani's email, his is a good option too. I think that, if we cannot have a separate q&a session, we could send questions regarding the keynote even directly to NVAccess and translate back their responses to distribute them throughout the Spanish-speaking community.

Hello Ivan,

do you know a person or would you be available to coordonate the questions and answers collection from and to the spanish community? Note that you or the person in charge should also attend the Q&A session or at least hear the recordings of the Q&A sessions for the english speaking people and then consider only the questions which have not been answered in those Q&A sessions already. In any case we should make sure that we avoid asking NV Access the same questions multiple times.

Don't worry: Me, a translator or any of my teammates will be attending the live keynote and the q&a session.

To summar, if I haven't missunderstood anything, we agree at the following points:

1. Replay the recorded keynote+recorded translation>NVDACon TeamTalk (pending permission). Also:

    A. Separate q&a session. OR

    B. Asynchronous q&a management: we send you or NVAccess directly the questions attendants have regarding keynote contents, they answer and we collect the responses.

OR

2. Simultaneous translation of the live keynote>Our platform=more logistics. For q&a, options A or B from point 1, or simultaneous translation too.

Am I wrong at some point?

Regards.

Hello Ivan,

do you know a person or would you be available to coordonate the questions and answers collection from and to the spanish community? Note that you or the person in charge should also attend the Q&A session or at least hear the recordings of the Q&A sessions for the english speaking people and then consider only the questions which have not been answered in those Q&A sessions already. In any case we should make sure that we avoid asking NV Access the same questions multiple times.

Best

Adriani

Cheers,

Derek

Hi.

sorry for the delay, we were full of work these weeks.

Hello,

reaching the american People will not be a Problem I guess.

Best
