Many notes on NVDACon

January NVDACON Update:

There’s a new international planning sub group

international@NVDACon.groups.io
https://nvdacon.groups.io/g/international
The old (parent) group intl@nvdacon.groups.IO group is hereby for international coordination, and/or leaders of regional and international conferences to coordinate or ask for advice. That group isn’t for planning the international event anymore, as explained at the last meeting.
Subscribe to this group by sending mail to international+subscribe@NVDACon.groups.io
If you want to plan the international conference, subscribe by Wednesday.
Also, let’s have a count down for some amazing news!

We have a new website!!!!!!

I need to thank NV Access for kindly hosting a wordpress site at nvdacon.org! We are about to post the call for topics for the conference, and other news. We need to figure out how to get a contact form put up for questions to go to, and/or for conference submissions. These can be emailed to international+owner@NVDACon.groups.io or nvdacon+owner@NVDACon.groups.io. A form to do this would be best. Does any of our resident wp experts know if contact forms can easily be created (I’m not adverse to writing some PHP if need be either). I’d say, let’s get this call for topics, which was kindly written by Ashley, out the door by Friday. We just need to get the site blog ready.

Do we want a static or scrolling front page?

If it were static, it’d talk about the latest conference only, if it is scrolling, it’d have our most recent posts floating near the top. I’m not sure what the cool people these days do (Back when I was a kid, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and you had to be careful or else you became dinner (Being blind was so hard in those days)), a webpage with dynamic content was beyond our wildest dreams.

Page suggestions:

  • Homepage, TBD.
  • Conference schedule (Must be static).
  • Archives: Archives of the last conferences. (If we can’t do it on youtube, we might just have to nuke conferences files over some age).
  • past schedules (Should we)???
  • about/motivation: why we exist, why have conferences.
  • List of regional conferences. A page with links to other NVDACon regional events websites.
  • Other pages should be proposed on this new list.

We love our regional conferences!

If you are planning a regional NVDACon, ask me and I can try to get you a .nvdacon.org subdomain E.G. us.nvdacon.org. We can’t host it however, just give you the name. Regional conferences are a good way to have non-english conferences. Please send an email to the intl parent group with your request for a subdomain.

Volunteers needed:

  • research plugins for wordpress that allow us to display schedule times in peoples local timezones. Important.
  • I and NV Access still need to figure out how we are going to store archives. I’m hoping we can figure out a way to Youtubeify the audio files from the past NVDA Conferences. Does anyone know how to do this, and/or want to do it?
  • Outreach: Can someone reach out to podcasts and other blindness publications such as Eyes on Success, ACB Radio, and other international groups? If you can even get me contact info, that would be more than enough, then I can send out a letter informing them about the conference. Important, important, important!
  • Conference planning. I’ll be at CSUN. I want to try to organize an NVDACon meetup. If anyone has info on what needs done to accomplish this, let me know. This is a good way to broaden our chances of being seen as a legitimate venue for NVDA users to learn more about NVDA, and interact with other NVDA users.
  • Website writing. Want a chance to make the new NVDACon website? We have multiple pages needing written. If you are interested in volunteering, let me know! You should be confident at writing at a level suitable for making a website look good. Important, important!
  • Conference session ideas. Please be making a list of sessions you’d like to see, and prepare to send the NVDACon call for topics far and wide.
  • Music: If you are musically gifted, we’d like a promotion piece that we can play at the beginning of promotional audio clips, video clips, and conference archives, to brand us as a conference. It doesn’t need to be long or special, but should set us apart. We also would like introduction music to welcome NV Access to the keynote as we did last year.
  • archive and pull down and zip the old NVDACon website. Can someone go through and archive everything on the old NVDACon website? Josephs gonna take the site off line next month. http://nvda-kr.org/en/nvdacon.php

Did you notice?

The number 4 was missing in the countdown.

Cheers, and I look forward to having NVDACon, come May or early June.

Hi Derek,
LOL, it was 5 that was missing and not 4. Your childhood with
dinosaurs was also hilarious!
On a serious note though, although I had stated that I would be unable
to join the international planning committee for NVDACon this year, I
however can make pre-conference contributions in the following ways:
'• research plugins for wordpress that allow us to display schedule
times in peoples local timezones. Important.'
Waqas had found one such Wordpress plugin which we had used in the
Conference Schedule page for NVDACon Asia. I can ask him to re-share
the same for the purpose of the international edition this time.
'• Outreach: Can someone reach out to podcasts and other blindness
publications such as Eyes on Success, ACB Radio, and other
international groups? If you can even get me contact info, that would
be more than enough, then I can send out a letter informing them about
the conference. Important, important, important!'
I can certainly assist in this regard. Although I would be happy to
personally reach out to AT publishing agencies, I reckon it more
suitable if you, as the conference chairperson, were to contact them
after I provide required contact details. If you require this
information by a certain date, I would be perfectly fine with
initiating the process of compilation of relevant contact details.
'• Website writing. Want a chance to make the new NVDACon website? We
have multiple pages needing written. If you are interested in
volunteering, let me know! You should be confident at writing at a
level suitable for making a website look good. Important, important!'
I was responsible for writing all the website content for NVDACon
Asia, and I guess I did a fair job. I would be happy to be a content
writer for NVDACon International 2017 as well.
Note: Since NVDACon Asia's website content is now several months old,
and the limited Asian NVDA users that read it would have lost memory
of it, I think it would be okay to utilize some of the more generic
bits of the same for the website of the international NVDA conference,
if deemed appropriate and sufficiently professional by fellow
committee members.
'• Conference session ideas. Please be making a list of sessions you’d
like to see, and prepare to send the NVDACon call for topics far and
wide.'
I would be happy to assist in the preliminary promotion of NVDACon
International 2017, i.e. call for topics and ideas. I however cannot
guarantee availability during the times just before the conference
because of my probably tight schedule from March onwards.
With reference to your poll (not really a poll though) about a static
VS dynamic homepage, I would vote for static.
The creation of these many groups and subgroups, in my view, may
become potentially and superfluously confusing. I would like to
believe that all regional conference organizers should be interested
in all happenings and activities related to the international variant,
which should be the parent group itself, and all regional conferences
should be provided a subgroup. I am unable to comprehend the necessity
of an 'international' and an 'intl', because the limited amount of
regional and international conference coordination that takes place
for NVDACons at the present time does not justify the formation of
another subgroup for the same objective.
Thanks.

Understand. The issue is that there are 40 members of the planning committee, and 20 members on the widely available public announcements list. This is frustrating, because I know that more people care about the conference than planning the conference, and my attempts to notify people they might not be on an announce list, and how to switch, have ended up in no one actually switching. I guess I could just continue to use this email list and hope we don't push away people who think they're on an announce list.

Hi Derek,
* I have Skyped Waqas requesting the same Wordpress plugin.
* I will begin compiling related contact information at the earliest,
and provide it as and when ready (possibly in parts).
* I may and may not be available from March onwards, because I am
taking my tenth grade seriously. However, the possibility still
remains of me being able to contribute during those period too,
particularly in the second fortnight of May when I have my summer
vacations. It is simply that I do not wish to commit to anything for
then.
* For our objective, I still believe a static homepage to be more suitable.
* Don't worry about the content writing bits. I will ensure all your
listed topics are extensively covered to the best of my abilities.
However, isn't it that I can use my existing Wordpress account (with
which I had created one blog for experimentational purposes) to gain
edit access to nvdacon.org as well, or is it necessary for me to
create a new account?
* I had expressed my views on this before during a Teamtalk session
probably during past planning meetings. In my opinion, taking into
account the sufficiently low-trafficc nature of the NVDACon planning
mailing list, I find the announcements list to be quite redundant and
somewhat of an overkill. My vision of an NVDACon e-group structure is
as follows:
Parent group - NVDACon International planning, coordination and
regional conference invites
Subgroups - 1 for each NVDACon regional's planning
This would build a structurally systematic framework for planning of
all regional and global NVDACons with great scope for cooperation and
uniformity.
* On an unrelated yet extremely important note, I do think it
imperative that we convince blindness related radio stations to
broadcast NVDACon International 2017 live. I had arranged this for
NVDACon Asia with RadioUdaan in India, and this certainly expanded the
reach of the Asian conference to approximately 1300 individuals. The
RNIB's Insight Radio, ACB Radio among others that folks may be aware
of are also potential Internet stations to be purposefully contacted.
I am fairly certain that RadioUdaan would be willing to broadcast this
time about as well given their satisfaction with the Asian
conference's management and quality (though admittedly, this time
about they'd prefer proper pre-conference instruction, unlike our
slightly flawed pre-conference collaboration in the case of NVDACon
Asia). In my past experiences of Teamtalk, there is a limited amount
of visually impaired individuals who are on or show willingness to set
up Teamtalk, therefore an easy-to-tune Internet radio station(s) is an
absolute must. Their participation and interactions could be managed
by a dedicated individual via Skype and/or e-mail.
* In hope of having high-quality conference sessions from esteemed
speakers, we must ensure recruitment of adept audio editors. This can
be done by putting up this voluntary position request on NVDA and
NVDACon lists, as well as audio editing program accessibility forums
(such as Audacity for the blind's mailing list).
Thanks.

Understand. The issue is that there are 40 members of the planning
committee, and 20 members on the widely available public announcements list.
This is frustrating, because I know that more people care about the
conference than planning the conference, and my attempts to notify people
they might not be on an announce list, and how to switch, have ended up in
no one actually switching. I guess I could just continue to use this email
list and hope we don’t push away people who think they’re on an announce
list.

Good point.
Thanks.

Hi Derek,
* I'll make sure to create a new Wordpress account at the earliest.
* I'd be happy to coordinate the initial effort of getting RadioUdaan
on board as a live broadcaster. I cannot commit to be in-charge during
the actual conference due to previously stated time constraints,
though there should be limited issues because a RadioUdaan
representative is already well-versed with the same software setup.
* As a mental note, I do need to provide subscription information for
the Audacity for the blind mailing list, don't I, Derek? Let me know
if you have the same subscription details already.
* I have compiled a currently limited list of news disemination
services, assistive tech news sites, blindness related radio stations
among other types of related agencies we may need to reach out to
requesting various kinds of collaborations and assistance. Please find
attached the same document.
Thanks.

Resending. I forgot to convert from markdown to formatted email.

Waqas had found one such Wordpress plugin which we had used in the
Conference Schedule page for NVDACon Asia. I can ask him to re-share
the same for the purpose of the international edition this time.

That would be amazing.

‘• Outreach: Can someone reach out to podcasts and other blindness

if deemed appropriate and sufficiently professional by fellow

I would be happy to assist in the preliminary promotion of NVDACon

guarantee availability during the times just before the conference
because of my probably tight schedule from March onwards.

That’s fine. I understand that. Are you busy in June BTW? We’ll
probably
hold this at the middle-to end of may, or early June.

With reference to your poll (not really a poll though) about a static

That sounds great. I’m just not sure, I’ve seen more dynamic lately.

Hi Derek,
* Feel free to make up any username, display name and other necessary
credentials. In the e-mail address front, I will be able to use my
current one with which I have had another account associated as well,
won't I? Let me know in case a new e-mail account will be required for
the Wordpress account. Apologies for my previous incorrect
understanding of this topic.
* As a mentnal note, I would also like to compile a list of e-mail
lists to which NVDACon International 2017 could be promoted, in which
list I will also separately include the Audacity for the blind forum.
* I was also wondering if we could create e-mail accounts with the
domain nvdacon.org, such as info@... for handling enquiries of
potential participants, derek@... and the like for other
conference oranizers, etc. If this can be achieved without non-trivial
work, and particularly without bringing any costs, I think this may
serve well as a dedicated account for our activities at NVDACon and
probably add a shade of professionalism to the conference.
* I also sincerely wish there to be a larger group of proactive
conference organizers, because if nothing else, I am sure that they
would be able to at least spread the word in their respective personal
capacities about NVDACon. Striving for this, we may need to send group
invites (facilitated by Groups.io) to as many NVDA users we can.
Before sharing further ideas in this aspect, Derek, could you share
the current moderators and owners of the NVDACon e-group? If possible,
I would like to be promoted to moderator so that I can issue group
invites myself with descriptive invite messages. To note, I have had
sufficient past administrative experience on Groups.io and apart from
subgroups, I have played about and understood most other
administrative functions. Regardless of whether you would be
comfortable in doing the same, I propose that we begin diseminating
invitations to forums, e-groups and mailing lists to the NVDACon
International 2017 planning committee, providing subscription details
for this list alongside. I believe one group invite e-mail also
wouldn't be considered spammy if sent using the Groups.io feature to
all group members of the NVDA Users International Forum, if the
moderator and owner of that e-group permit that. At the risk of being
a tiny bit persistent and obnoxious, I feel such measures justified
as it is essential we encourage many of the NVDA community to start
helping organize global events celebrating this screen reader.
Thanks.

the actual conference due to previously stated time constraints,
though there should be limited issues because a RadioUdaan
representative is already well-versed with the same software setup.
Understood.

* As a mental note, I do need to provide subscription information for
the Audacity for the blind mailing list, don't I, Derek? Let me know
if you have the same subscription details already.
You can add that to the document, that would be great.

* I have compiled a currently limited list of news disemination
services, assistive tech news sites, blindness related radio stations
among other types of related agencies we may need to reach out to
requesting various kinds of collaborations and assistance. Please find
attached the same document.
Cool. I've saved this.

Thanks.

You need a new account. This is because NVDACon uses wordpress.org (The
OOS
software where each site requires new accounts.

Sounds great!

Asia).
If you can help set this up, that would be great.

This is one thing I think hindering our growth, and radio stations may
help
a lot.

Good point.

Thanks.

Resending. I forgot to convert from markdown to formatted email.

Waqas had found one such Wordpress plugin which we had used in the
Conference Schedule page for NVDACon Asia. I can ask him to re-share
the same for the purpose of the international edition this time.

That would be amazing.

‘• Outreach: Can someone reach out to podcasts and other blindness
publications such as Eyes on Success, ACB Radio, and other
international groups? If you can even get me contact info, that
would
be more than enough, then I can send out a letter informing them
about
the conference. Important, important, important!’

That would be great. How about by the beginning of February, but
I’ll
accept
information from people anytime before the conference to be honest.

‘• Website writing. Want a chance to make the new NVDACon website?
We
have multiple pages needing written. …

I was responsible for writing all the website content for NVDACon
Asia, and I guess I did a fair job. I would be happy to be a content
writer for NVDACon International 2017 as well.
Note: Since NVDACon Asia’s website content is now several months
old,
and the limited Asian NVDA users that read it would have lost memory
of it, I think it would be okay to utilize some of the more generic
bits of the same for the website of the international NVDA
conference,
if deemed appropriate and sufficiently professional by fellow
committee members.

Can you send me privately a username and email, first and last name,
so
I
can give you a wordpress account for nvdacon.org? Then, maybe write
either
the about, home, or some other static page. If you want to do the
past
conferences page that would be super helpful, we just need all the
info
Joseph had on the old site. Iit’s just really historical information
really,
and thus not that important compared to home, about, or others I
listed.

‘• Conference session ideas. Please be making a list of sessions
you’d
like to see, and prepare to send the NVDACon call for topics far and
wide.’

I would be happy to assist in the preliminary promotion of NVDACon
International 2017, i.e. call for topics and ideas. I however cannot
guarantee availability during the times just before the conference
because of my probably tight schedule from March onwards.

That’s fine. I understand that. Are you busy in June BTW? We’ll
probably
hold this at the middle-to end of may, or early June.

With reference to your poll (not really a poll though) about a
static
VS dynamic homepage, I would vote for static.

That sounds great. I’m just not sure, I’ve seen more dynamic lately.

The creation of these many groups and subgroups, in my view, may
become potentially and superfluously confusing.

yes

I would like to believe that all regional conference organizers
should
be interested in all happenings and activities related to the
international
variant, which should be the parent group itself, and all regional
conferences should be provided a subgroup. I am unable to comprehend
the
necessity of an ‘international’ and an ‘intl’, because the limited
amount of
regional and international conference coordination that takes place
for
NVDACons at the present time does not justify the formation of
another
subgroup for the same objective.

Understand. The issue is that there are 40 members of the planning
committee, and 20 members on the widely available public
announcements
list.
This is frustrating, because I know that more people care about the
conference than planning the conference, and my attempts to notify
people
they might not be on an announce list, and how to switch, have ended
up
in
no one actually switching. I guess I could just continue to use this
email
list and hope we don’t push away people who think they’re on an
announce
list.

Hi Jamie,
* Sounds perfect. I agree that individual e-mail accounts may become
an unnecessary hassle. We may generate more aliases as need be, but
just a couple all the same, to avoid unnecessary duplication or
potential confusion.
Thanks.
